Sin

A struggle with sin

“As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me” Rom 7:17

I hate my sin.

I want to resist temptation.

I want some victories.

All I see are my losses.

And they are many.

“I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.” Rom 7:18

This is me.

There is so much I want to do.

So much sin I want to avoid.

I have the desire for good,

but lack the power to carry it out.

“For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do – this I keep on doing.” Rom 7:19

Time after time the pattern repeats:

I sin, repent, get tempted, sin, repent…

How do I break this stupid cycle?

“Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.” Rom 7:20

What does this even mean?

Can my mistakes be blamed on my sinful nature?

How does that help me obey God?

“So I find this law at work: When I want to good, evil is right there with me.” Rom 7:21

This is certainly true.

I will be thinking of something pure

When something evil tries to invade

“For in my inner being I delight in God’s Law;” Rom 7:22

I want to follow God!

I want to do what is right!

I want to chose life and not death!

“but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.” Rom 7:23

I feel trapped by my flesh.

Trapped by my sinful choices.

Trapped by the evil in the world

“What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?” Rom 7:24

Weak.
Guilty.

Shamed.

Dead.

“Thanks be to God – through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.” Rom 7:25

God saves me time after time.

I fall, He lifts me up.

I stumble, He makes my feet steady

Yet I feel ashamed of how weak I am.

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” Rom 8:1

I am in Christ Jesus!

I am not condemned!

“because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.” Rom 8:2

I am set free from sin and death

I no longer need to obey the sinful nature

I have the Spirit of Life!

“For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His own son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man,” Rom 8:3

By the law I am weak.

By the law I cannot resist sin

God sent His son to be an offering for my sin.

“in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.” Rom 8:4

I can be righteous.

I can live according to the Spirit.

“Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what the nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” Rom 8:5

I fight against the sinful nature

I fight to think about pure desires

I fight against what my nature desires

I fight to live according to the Spirit

“The mind of sinful man is death but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;” Rom 8:6

My natural mind is death

The Spirit gives life and peace

“the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.” Rom 8:7

My sinful mind hates God.

My sinful mind cannot do what is right.

But I love God.

I can submit to His’ law.

“Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.” Rom 8:8

I can please God

I am not totally controlled by sin

“You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.” Rom 8:9

I am not controlled by sin.

I am controlled by the Spirit.

The Spirit is within me.

I belong to Christ.

“But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.” Rom 8:10

My body is dead in sin

But I am alive in spirit

“And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.” Rom 8:11

I was dead

Now I am alive

Because I belong to Him who raised Christ from the dead

And gives life to my mortal body

“Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation – but it is not the sinful nature, to live according to it.” Rom 8:12

I do not have to sin.

I have not need to sin.

Sin no longer has a place in my life.

“For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live,” Rom 8:13

Sin leads to death

The Spirit can kill sin

I can live through the Spirit.

“because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” Rom 8:14

I am lead by the Spirit of God

I am a son of God.

“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by Him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” Rom 8:15

I do not have to to fear anything

I do not need to destroy myself with shame.

I cry out in desperation to my Father.

I cry out for help from Him.

“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” Rom 8:16

I am a child of the Creator of the Universe.

“Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory.” Rom 8:17

I am a heir in Christ.

That means I suffer just as He suffered while being tempted.

That means that even though I fail,

even though I stumble

even though I fall,

I can share in His glory.

I can participate in His kingdom.

I can resist sin.

I can fight evil.

I can do what is right!
